Which GCSE Specification to choose ?

Most departments will hopefully have come to some decision on the GCSE Specification that they are going to choose for first teaching from September 2009, and will hopefully have started the planning.

Some points to consider when choosing a specification (with thanks to Rob Lodge)

1. Can students be entered for modules in January as well as June in both Year 10 and 11 ?
2. What is the breakdown of marks per paper (%) and the balance of assessment types - does this suit the strengths of your students ?
3. Foundation and Higher tier developments
4. Availability of Specimen papers and other supporting documentation, and the format that this takes: paper based or e-specifications ?
5. Familiarity with DMEs
6. Timings of Controlled Assessments: how many ? how long ? what formats possible ? who moderates ?
7. Use of VLEs
8. What specification are majority of local schools in network / consortia doing ? What local support is there ?
9. Exam board and other INSET that has been attended
10. Development of NINGS and other online support..
