He started his career as a geography teacher at a London comprehensive, moving on to roles at the charity Action Aid and the Commonwealth Institute, before joining the RGS (with IBG). Whether via social media or through regular contributions to the Times Educational Supplement and other newspapers, Steve has become an important and trusted spokesperson for geography.

Professor Alastair Owens, the GAâs Chair of Trustees, commented:

âSteve Brace is a leading figure in the geography education community, and I am thrilled that he will be joining the GA. He brings deep experience of supporting geography teachers from primary to A level, has been influential in shaping education policy relevant to our discipline, has built many partnerships and raised funds to develop new initiatives, and has played a key role in making geography more diverse and inclusive.

Steveâs energy and strategic vision will enable the GA to address the needs of its members in responsive and imaginative ways and ensure that it continues to be a powerful voice in advocating for the relevance and value of a geographical education in a rapidly changing world. The GA and geographical education are in very good hands.â

Steve Brace said:

âI am delighted to be joining the GA as its Chief Executive and to lead the organisation at such an important time for our subject. My first GA conference was in 1989. Since then, I have worked alongside many GA colleagues, its trustees and members â and long admired its work.

The GA, and our subject community as a whole, have much to celebrate. There have been significant improvements in geography teaching across primary and secondary schools. Exam entries have increased and geographers are receiving greater public recognition.

However, there is more work needed to strengthen the supply of subject specialist geography teachers, to protect and develop fieldwork, advance equality, diversity and inclusion and better connect geographyâs value to all young peopleâs aspirations. The GA, through its own work and in partnership, has a vital role to play in addressing such challenges. I am pleased to be joining during Denise Freemanâs Presidential year and look forward to working with her, Vice President Hina Robinson, the entire GA community and its collaborators to address these priorities.â

Steve will join the GA staff on 25 March 2024.

I wish him all the best for his new role. A good choice to lead the work of the Association. I've known and worked with Steve for many years, going back to the Action Plan for Geography days and we've met numerous times at events around the country. It's an exciting time ahead for him.

Some very important news from @The_GA: a very warm welcome to @SteveBraceGeog our new Chief Executive! https://t.co/yRGM0SsDkB
â Alastair Owens (@AlastairHackney) March 14, 2024
Alan Parkinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14528013029514239163noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5069674826503269939.post-78086143361446356552024-03-12T20:03:00.003+00:002024-03-12T20:03:51.430+00:00Anthropocene or not?
Are we in the Anthropocene?

This story describes a row between different groups who disagree over whether we are. My grandfather and other family members were coal miners and we knew there were coal seams running under our village and surrounding areas - I remember a house collapsing from subsidence once. Now you can find these signs of the past on this map from the Coal Authority.

The miners' strike was something else I remember well. Several friends spent a lot of time marching and fund raising. Our minibus was occasionally stopped when carrying out undergraduate fieldwork as the police thought we might be flying pickets.

The village where I lived was only a few miles from the Maltby Colliery, and there was a lot of ill feeling between those who stayed out and those who went back. Orgreave was only about four miles from home too and the TV coverage of the time was all over the local news in the evening. This was a desperate time for many. There has been a number of recent TV dramas and documentaries as it is now coming up to 40 years on from the strike - amazingly.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtsNADVqNCQLl_xeLQdaA94M4YUxyvJagRUarlT20a9jJmL0o_5ghcM9vLyu-3Xfuq5hO8NqEINZs8u6NJeppffdKjd3-L2Sp0E8TfxyAAkkXc7Wc9bO7DFStCne3l0pzGuMNZv1GVHUZB96Jst3OC4umkzcPdaps43vOfc-10CXSb6viBlaNMDdwcB_U/s2668/Screenshot%202024-01-18%20at%2011.03.05.png" style="margin-left: 1em; I was a Fawcett Fellow there during last academic year - see the blog for lots of posts about that experience.

I've been going to UCL quite regularly for around 20 year since the era when we had our GA Secondary Phase Committee and Education Group meetings there, to meetings with David Lambert when he worked there, and previous sessions for the PGCE cohorts over the years, as well as GA project meetings. We used to have our lunch in the nearby cafe in Russell Square.

Was interested to see that several years on, building work is still taking place in the buildings.

My session was on the use of technology to assist curriculum making, which I explained is what teachers do in the classroom... and what I researched for my Fawcett Fellowship.

It's an updated version of a talk I've done quite a few times before over the years.

There were a few new emphases which I quite liked relating to teaching with (or without) technology. One of them was to cultivate your idiosyncracies based on a quote from Dylan Wiliam on the value of listening to research. I'm not a major fan of the cherry-picked research on cognitive science that some schools use to dictate how teachers teach. I talked a bit about my encounters with previous fads in education too.

I wish these new arrivals into the profession good luck, and hope they have a long and fulfilling career.
Alan Parkinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14528013029514239163noreply@blogger.com0
