Gold Farming: a new Industrial case study

Enquiry Question:
How would you like a job where you get to play computer games all day ?
Sound tempting ?

One possible new context for looking at the issue of INDUSTRY, GLOBALISATION, SECTORAL SHIFT, RESOURCES etc. could be a phenomenon known as 'gold farming'.

This is related to the growth in the number of people playing online games.
One of the most popular is WORLD OF WARCRAFT.

Making progress in the game requires the earning of virtual 'GOLD' which can then be spent on items in the game, which earn the player additional skills or status. This takes time, and incredibly, it seems that some players are deciding that they would rather pay somebody else to do the hard work of playing the game, and just enjoy spending the 'gold' to see an instant increase in their power and influence in the game, or perhaps to buy a magic sword or some other item that makes playing the game easier or more enjoyable. It can certainly take a lot of hours to work through the early parts of a game.
There have been a number of useful articles on the industry in the last few weeks.

Where do you think the industry is taking place ?

Who do you think the gold farmers are - age / sex / skills etc. ?

More to come...
