The Arsenal Stadium Mystery

Image by John Griffin with thanks....

"The Arsenal Stadium Mystery" was the name of an old film from the 1930's. It was one of the first films to feature football as central to the plot.

Many schools took the opportunity of the changes to the KS3 curriculum to add units which had titles such as "The Geography of Sport" - the lessons I used to teach are still available on my GEOGRAPHYPAGES website. The lessons included a thinking skills "mystery" activity written by former colleagues of mine...

Arsenal's stadium used to be HIGHBURY: their home ground from the time the club was founded in 1913.

In 2006, the club decided, for the various reasons that will be familiar to those teachers and students who have followed a similar activity, to move to a new, larger, stadium very close to the existing stadium: surprisingly close if you visit the area. The new EMIRATES stadium, which can be seen in the background of the image at the top of the blog post was opened in 2006.

The STADIUM: HIGHBURY SQUARE has a website which goes into detail on the new redevelopment of the stadium. I walked past, and there was lots of activity going on, but the development looks like being of a very high quality, with a central communal garden where the pitch was.

The area of London where the stadia are based is called ISLINGTON. I had a mooch round here recently while in London for an event, and there is a great deal of change in the area. What was interesting was seeing the temporary stalls that were setting up in the streets near the underground station ready for a match that evening.

Finally on this theme E-ON's CARBON FOOTYPRINT website is a useful resource in this area.

More to come shortly....

Arsenal were not founded in 1913 they were founded in 1886. They moved to Highbury in 1913.
