John Snow's Cholera Maps

These were the first examples of a GIS in action really... a combination of maps and data which, when used in particular combinations revealed the story of the cholera outbreak in London.

There has now been an update to bring this into the 21st Century.

Robin Wilson has posted some useful materials including ESRI Shape files which will work with ESRI GIS software and enable students to explore the activity, perhaps in relation to a unit on the Geography of Disease ?

Thanks to John Sayers for tipoff...
