Underland - a powerful subterranean geography

Robert MacFarlane has a great many fans in the geography community. His books have wonderful geographical connections and I have used them many times over the years in my teaching, and when working with teachers.

These include an SAGT session from a few years ago, where I used Digimap for Schools to retrace Robert's steps in a passage from 'The Old Ways' (which was described in such detail that all the details could be picked out on the Mastermap)

Here's the whole PPT for those who might be interested:

I've also used descriptions of landscapes from 'Landmarks', including the idea of the word hoard, and used descriptions from 'Mountains of the Mind' when exploring upland glaciated landscapes.
This Guardian piece written by Robert suggests that his new book: 'Underland' will be essential reading for all geographers, and I have no doubt that this will be the case.
It is packed with links to elements of the geography curriculum.

If you have an interest in seeing Robert speak, then head for Cambridge next Wednesday, the 8th of May to see him speak at a Waterstones event.

He is also speaking in Ely on the 7th of July
This is being arranged by Toppings Books, and you can get a ticket with a copy of the book included.

You can also hear Robert reading extracts from his book all this week as it is Radio 4's Book of the Week so listen in on catch-up...

And finally, here's my signed copy picked up from Toppings earlier this week...
Can't wait to get stuck in. I have a long weekend in our caravan by the coast coming up, so that seems like ideal fodder for a lazy few hours. I'll post a full review over on the GeoLibrary blog.
