STA #FootprintsnotForests Campaign

I've been contacted by STA Travel who asked me to share some news about a campaign they are launching called #FootprintsNotForests

STA Travel Education's campaign offers some tips teachers and school leaders can implement in their school. The timing of the campaign isn't ideal, but once schools return to action, there is plenty that can be done.

Here's what they told me are the main areas they are focussing on in the campaign. The text that follows was provided by STA.

Recycling
“Reduce, reuse and recycle” is the name, and cutting emission is the game! In terms of paper, it’s always worth checking if it is recycled, as well as efficiently and ethically sourced. Online lessons and teaching are a great way to reduce paper usage. If you’re printing resources, think carefully about how many copies you need before you hit the print button.

I'm interested in how much less paper is now being used. Hundreds of reams of paper are going to be saved from the photocopier over the coming months.

Food Waste
Remember food waste can be used as compost in the school garden, and left-over water from water bottles can be used to water the plants. Every little helps!

Bike to school schemes

It’s no news that walking and cycling is a green alternative to car travel. If schools install cycle racks and onsite showers this can make it easier for staff and students to get moving!

Carbon offsetting
They’re green, they give out oxygen, plus, they look super cute! Offsetting by investing in the school garden is a great way to balance out school emissions.
Planting trees and watching their progress is an awesome opportunity to bring students together and get hands on with STEM learning!

Reducing energy waste
Technology to help us save energy is everywhere. From motion sensored lighting, to insulation and sensible heating meters. As a teacher,  play your part by making sure the windows are closed when using heat control.

Again, there are going to have been significant heating costs saved.

Cut the carbon of school trips
Call us biased, but we think school trips are an amazing opportunity to bring learning to life, fully immerse students into their subject, and make some memories along the way. Obviously with travel, comes emissions. Teachers can utilise smart alternatives to ensure their trip is having a minimal impact. So, if you’re planning a short school trip to France opt for a coach travel rather than a flight.

Create green groups
Bring students and teachers together as they go all green fingers and thumbs! If green groups get your students to set targets for energy consumption, and carbon footprint reduction, that way they’ll really be invested in the change! It’s also worth enlisting the help of your local authority. Sustainability is rapidly rising on agendas, often authorities are happy to get involved with projects.
