Geography of Geography: the evidence base

A new report authored by Steve Brace and Catherine Souch has been released by the RGS-IBG.

It would make perfect reading in conjunction with a copy of 'Why Study Geography' - particularly the Introduction and Chapters 2 and 5.

It is mentioned in the latest RGS-IBG bulletin, which I received today.

Steve Brace told me that the report includes statistics from a number of sources which have been linked together for the first time, and contains some good news, but other areas where there is still work to do. It covers GCSE to 'A' level and 'A' level to university study comparisons. It's clear that undergraduate geographers are now more likely to be female. There is also some progress with regard to BAME and disadvantaged students.

An interesting read with plenty of statistics to quote for open evenings and option evenings as we move into the time when some students are making important decisions about their futures for the next academic year, which may well be one which sees an attempt to make up for the lost time of this year.

Click to download as a 15 page PDF.

It also includes this very useful image which shows the way that geographers take different routes.
