The World Health Organisation (WHO) has moved to attach Greek letters to signify variants of the COVID-19 virus.
This removes the geographical 'stigma' of naming certain variants from the place they were first identified. This has previously been used to link particular places with variants, and also led to phrases used by President Trump near the start of the outbreak which were not helpful.
We may already be heading for the next letter...
