Brexit - it's still an act of self-harm

I'm still waiting to see one aspect of Brexit which is even slightly positive.

This map makes me very sad.

We have now reached another date which will add extra complexity to those needing to trade with our closest trading bloc.

From the 1st of January 2022, the grace period ended, and trading will become even more difficult with additional bureaucracy which was of course designed to protect those countries within the customs union. It was one of the many benefits of EU membership, other than the fake ones that were promised on the sides of red buses and by politicians who were only thinking ahead to the next election and not the next fifty years... and clearly had no geographical skill.

The latest industry to face being wiped out is the flower industry and bulb growers of Cornwall, who have nobody to pick their daffodils for Spring 2022.

There are already signs that certain politicians are realising the damage that has been done, and are introducing new visa options for people with certain occupations to travel here. Unfortunately that freedom of movement is not available to young people in the UK (unless they have particular family connections or wealth).

We need to aim to reverse the whole process and rejoin the EU, and quickly - the economic damage has been too great.

Just a reminder of what Boris Johnson said in 2016, and I am sure he wouldn't lie about such a thing.

“British people will still be able to go and work in the EU; to live; to travel; to study; to buy homes and to settle down. There will continue to be free trade and access to the single market.”
