This last year has seen a number of very large volcanic eruptions. In 2021, Fagradasfjall in Iceland was the focus for a lot of attention, and more recently, Tonga was blanketed in ash following the huge eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai.
There are several active volcanoes currently such as Anak Krakatau. They are always a popular topic for students of all ages, with the variety of forms, impacts and techniques to predict and mitigate their effects. Some people live with volcanoes on their doorstep, and many owe their livelihoods to previous eruptions which have laid down fertile soils.
This presentation will look at how the media report volcanic hazards across the world. Karen will look at this with a critical thinking approach, offering strategies that can be incorporated within the classroom.
There will be specific links to valuable case studies, including the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland and how this compares to the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption in terms of its impact
