Heart of the City: Sheffield's redevelopment

Sheffield was my nearest city when I was growing up in South Yorkshire and we would travel there on the bus as I was growing up, when there were still large areas that were cleared and demolished but not yet build on - possibly even since WWII.

All that has changed now. As I've returned periodically (and particularly since 2008, when I first started working for the GA, the city is being reshaped and redeveloped and many familiar roads have been rerouted, or pedestrianised, or removed completely. The Town Hall has been demolished and replaced (possibly twice) and plenty of new buildings created or planned. The area around the GA's HQ has of course been through a lot of redevelopment.


The Heart of the City website contains a wealth of material about the developments so far, and the plans for more in the future.

Good for those teaching in, or about the city or urban regeneration more generally.

What makes Sheffield?
