Everyday Vignettes #3

A new book by Rachel Bowlby explores the importance of shops to British culture. Shopping is a part of everyday life.

Many people are now changing their shopping habits, with the rise of the discount supermarket, online shopping and new retail parks - as well as the disappearance of many familiar names.

It provides a useful update to an area of possible study that is an important one for those exploring changes in the local area.

The High Street and how it has dealt with the COVID pandemic is an area that is worth looking at. We have lost many stores which those of us of a certain age can remember being there for decades. Changing consumer behaviour, such as the growth of food delivery apps has the potential to change the physical structure of towns. And all the time, the consumption has an impact on the environment.

It can also provide an easily accessible context for the NEA.
