North Norfolk Coast

The North Norfolk coast has some areas which are at particular risk of coastal erosion. It is also the area of the coast that I chose for the Hodder OCR 'A' and 'B' GCSE Geography textbooks that I co-authored.

The work of the Happisburgh-based Coastal Concern Action Group is significant here. Malcolm Kerbey has been speaking to school groups and in other forums for many years now.

Last weekend's EDP had a feature on the proposed funding for this area and East Yorkshire which between them account for a significant proportion of the homes in England at risk of coastal erosion.

North Norfolk received £10 million and the rest went to the East Riding of Yorkshire.

According to the paper:

The district council will receive this funding to help its communities on areas of the coast that cannot sustainably be defended from coastal erosion. Residents will be supported to prepare and plan for the long term, while also trialling some immediate actions that support the long-term resilience of communities near the coast.

This includes improving damaged infrastructure, repurposing land and exploring finance mechanisms for high risk areas. The Environment Agency will manage the programme, supporting the area as it develops and delivers its local projects.

The Environment Agency is a strategic partner of the Geographical Association.
