Thomas Baerwald on the discipline and its collaborative nature

During a session on the idea of "sustainability" and GeoCapabilities at a recent event, a quote was shared which apparently came from Thomas Baerwald.

Baerwald was the President of the AAG in 2010.

The quote was as follows:

"if disciplines are tribes with distinctive cultures, geographers are a breed inclined to wandering, exploring and working together with others"

It is taken from his Presidential Address.

I found a copy of it on the link below:

Thomas J. Baerwald (2010) Prospects for Geography as an Interdisciplinary Discipline, Annals of the Association of American Geographers, 100:3, 493-501, DOI: 10.1080/00045608.2010.485443

The new AAG website is also now updated to include a great deal of additional information which may be of interest to UK geographers.

“Progress is ever through the interaction of the sciences one on another; and scientific trespass is one of the profitable modes of interaction” (Gilbert 1909, 121–22).

The theme of Collaboration will be a strong one for Alastair Owens' Presidential year 2022-3
