James Bond and Soft Power

I started this post a couple of years ago, well before the announcement of the death of Sean Connery, and the eventual release of 'No Time to Die' - the final film to feature Daniel Craig in the role, which I watched on IMAX in Norwich.

I'd been reading a bit about James Bond, following the decision to push back the release of the latest Bond movie, triggered by the pandemic and its impact on cinema audiences.

Some tweets from the time are shown below. They refer to the term "soft power" which many will be familiar with. It forms part of several of the GCSE and 'A' level qualifications.

James Bond has a lot of global connections of course, and not just in terms of the locations visited during the film franchise.

I have a copy of the book to inform some proposed writing on the theme of soft power and also links with the representation of countries in the film franchise which has been problematic to say the least at times.

More to come on this when I get some time to work through that project.

This Conversation piece, written by Dodds also explores how Brexit reshaped the world and may make Bond's globetrotting a little harder in time.

It will be interesting to see where the casting of Bond goes next, particularly as Dr. Who has gone with Ncuti Gatwa for the latest Dr.
