River Otter - learning materials

The GeographySW team have been working with the people behind the Lower River Otter Restoration Project to create some learning materials.

The resources are now available.

The River Otter is a small river located in east Devon. From its source in the Blackdown Hills, the river flows 44km (27 miles) south to discharge into the English Channel at Budleigh Salterton.

The river flows through a rural farming landscape, with mostly small cattle, sheep and dairy farms. There are many smaller tributaries which promote rapid runoff after rainfall events. The river rises and falls very quickly.

Much of the Lower Otter valley is flat and low-lying. Flooding is common following extreme rainfall events.

The resources explore the plans to reshape the lower course of the river, to allow for the sea to reclaim some of the land and create a natural flood defence.
The river is also the location for the reintroduction of beavers, which has gone very well.

The resources were created by John Davidson, and take the form of a powerpoint presentation and accompanying teacher notes.
