GA Conference 2023 #13: Scarecrow Geography

One of my personal highlights was the Scarecrow Geography session, which was presented by Sharon Witt and Helen Clarke along with Colin Walker, who came appropriately dressed.

The session explored field wisdom and related areas, with references to Mackenzie Crook's reboot of Worzel Gummidge as well as quotes from the original book which showed how the scarecrows were the guardians of wisdom about the seasons - a theme which the modern reboot placed at the centre of some of the episodes.

We had the chance to make our own scarecrows for our own particular landscapes - I made one rooted in the landscape of Breckland - and also put together field handbooks choosing a particular field. I picked one that I had walked through repeatedly during lockdown, and had seen almost every day for a year as crops came and went.

We also made a 'field of fields' from green post-it notes, which was an excellent and simple idea, with a change for creativity - how many different 'fields' can you name? We managed quite a few of them.

The session was filmed and can be seen again by those who came along to the conference.
