Changing Tourism

“Places that are accustomed to crazy heat, like Spain, well, they have a lifestyle that accommodates that — they have a siesta, they have canvas awnings over the walkways so people can have shade while they walk around, they have restaurants that are designed to let people eat in breezy spots,

This New York Times piece (I'm a subscriber) explores changes to the tourism industry during the recent heatwaves and the potential for different decisions about where to go.

The BBC News had a short video story about tourists who were actively going to the places where temperature records were likely to be broken so that they could experience it and say there were there....

There's also the beginning of a trend of "last chance to see" tourism (which was also the title of a book by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine)

Some people have had their holidays cancelled due to the fires which are devastating the Greek island of Rhodes. There have been over 19000 people evacuated and some airlines began cancelling their flights and even running repatriation flights from tomorrow to bring tourists back from what was being described in newspapers as "hell".

Also check out the Washington Post article here, which suggests that the alterations to our holiday plans are likely to become more frequent (and permanent).

What other changes in tourism trends do you think are likely?

Which new destinations will develop in the more temperate climates of the world?
