Another new eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula

Another new eruption started at 11.14pm on Wednesday evening (Nov 20, 2024), in the Sundhnúks craters - where previous eruptions have occurred.

Benedikt Ófeigsson from the Met Office reported that the fissure was extending exclusively northeast, spanning just over two kilometers. The lava flow was initially primarily moving westward toward Grindavíkurvegur (the road).

"It appears this eruption is less intense compared to the previous one, with a significantly reduced lava flow," Benedikt noted, adding that Grindavíkurvegur is currently the only infrastructure potentially at risk in the near term, based on the present conditions.

It looks like some power infrastructure has also been reached looking at the webcam stream.

The wind direction is also favorable for minimizing gas pollution, as northerly winds are carrying it out to sea.

Update
The lava has covered the car park of the Blue Lagoon... a place I've visited many times. There are some remarkable images coming out of this area, and the work of the people shifting earth and rock to create and stabilise the defensive walls.
