Where is the fish you eat caught or produced?
Food labelling can give you some of the answer sometimes. I tend to buy fish caught off the coast of Iceland, or up in the Barents Sea; my Sea Bass tends to be Turkish or Greek - according to the label.
Dawn Wright shared some new data that has been added to ESRI mapping.
The data comes from Global Fishing Watch.
As the ESRI blog page says:
Fish serves as the major source of protein for over 3 billion people worldwide, requiring a global, industrial fishing effort that spans the farthest reaches of our oceans – while applying unrelenting pressure on global fish stocks, sovereign waters, and sensitive ecosystems. For the first time, we can now illuminate these vessels and put their activity on the map, answering the question, “Do you know where your fish comes from?”
One of the key locations for fish eaten in the EU is Iceland. The data make this very obvious.
