Fischer Farms

As I drive to Norwich from where I live I pass a large complex to the right, up on the hill as I approach Easton, on the western edge of the city.

It has become more visible in the last few months as due to ongoing work to dual the A47 as it approaches the city, thousands of trees have been felled.

Not everyone's happy about that as you can imagine. One hopes they will be replanted once the road is finished.

This building, covering around 4 acres is Europe's largest vertical farm and run by Fischer Farms.

Tristan Fischer is the CEO. The company has featured in a few magazines etc and was on the local news magazine programme earlier this year, and Sky News. The website calls their work 'the future of farming'.

The website has some information on the company and what they do.

Vertical farming is often mentioned in geography exam specifications in resource / food security topics.

I've taught this as a topic for quite a few years now, and there have been other farms which we have looked at in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur which use aeroponics / hydroponics to grow a range of crops which can grow in alternative media to soil.

A possible future case study. It would be good to have a look round some time...
