What a way to start my summer holiday, which started today!
Down to UCL / IOE for a conference for PGCE mentors / also with some of the Fawcett Fellows for this (and next) year. The focus for the session was Creativity in Geography Teaching.
I was asked to make a contribution.
David Mitchell had invited me earlier in the year. I was co-presenting with Margaret Roberts.
Margaret started the event exploring how we can ensure that students encounter creativity and also take part in it - which requires creative teaching. She shared ideas from her 2nd edition book on Enquiry.
Linking to Curriculum documents from Wales and Scotland (but not England). I also referenced the Northern Ireland approach which uses Capabilities.
Margaret shared ideas from other teachers including:
- Catherine Owen - exploring town centre regeneration with a degree of student agency
- Daryl Sinclair - telling migrant stories and celebrating languages - Language Festival at King's Ely.
- Kate Stockings - fertile questions - and sub-questions
Following this, four Fawcett Fellows presented some ideas.
Stefan Carron talked about the work of Teach First and the need to be creative in ITE.
ITE cohorts are becoming more ethnically diverse. This is important. Subject knowledge reflections are used as part of their work to close knowledge gaps, and provide grounds for hope, drawing on David Alcock's stories.
This was a really good introduction to the work of Teach First's support for teachers, led by David Preece, whose term on the RGS Education Committee ended this year, and who was very helpful and insightful in the role.
Alice Griffiths talked about the work of the Oak National Academy.
She also very kindly shared some images of me at work... which I don't always get...

Sarah Wells talked about her creative curriculum planning at her school. They had developed a Place based curriculum based on continents - knowing where things were, and overcoming curriculum inertia.
Cristina Gallagher - explored creative assessment opportunities
David Mitchell - talked about an interesting cross-curricular project with history called Living Cities.
This is a free resource which will be out shortly.
It is based on Animals / Plants / Water.
My session came next.... it's shared on Google Drive.
Thanks for all the very kind comments on the presentation, and to David and Leigh for the invite.
