'Big Issue' - reducing inequality

I've been writing about inequality for the last few months and along the way delved into the work of the Big Issue magazine to help the homeless. There are vendors in Norwich who I see and meet regularly when visiting the city.

The magazine always has something of interest in it, and often has stories which connect with geographical themes (of which homelessness is one).

The website offers a sample of the contents and some additional features including the chance to subscribe.

A story looked at one aspect of social inequality within the UK as we entered the summer holidays this year. This seems unlikely in a wealthy country like the UK, but was very much a problem.

Big Issue was co-founded by Gordon Roddick, husband of the late Anita Roddick who created the Body Shop. He bought a similar publication while visiting the USA which gave him the idea to start the publication and offer opportunities for homeless people to work rather than just take charitable handouts.

Their website has a lot of useful success stories and examples of how people have been helped by their involvement. The magazine is sold in several different countries.

A recent story, for example looked at the likely impact of the introduction of the BRIT card ID on the homeless.

In the end, a lot of what I wrote in this area was not used in the final project, so it's been added here to provide some ideas for how this issue could be developed when exploring inequalities within the UK and other places.
