The plan of Chicago, and Ernest Burgess

Many GCSE Geography students will still be expected to know about a model of urban land use which was developed in the early part of the last century, and based on a lake-side city which didn't have an obvious centre: Chicago.

The model was developed by Ernest Burgess, and is 100 years old this year.

David Rogers shared a really interesting video on a LinkedIn post earlier this week, which looked at the origins of that outdated model of urban structure.

The video he referred to is here:

This is a really useful contribution to the critical approach to teaching about urban land use: something which is currently part of many GCSE courses.

It's also worth remembering that Burgess was a sociologist with an interest in what he called "human ecology" which included some 'interesting' views on crime and which groups committed it and where they might be living.

This University of Chicago web page has an image of Burgess' early thinking as he developed the model.
