National Year of Reading 2026

The National Year of Reading 2026 is a government-backed campaign aimed at reversing the troubling decline in reading for pleasure across the UK.

It's backed by the Department for Education and the Literacy Trust. It aims to shift public perception of reading by encouraging people to "read into" their existing passions – ‘if you’re into, read into it’.

Fewer children than ever are saying that they enjoy reading.  The NLT's annual survey found just one in three children enjoy reading in 2025, the lowest since their records began in 2005.
  • Only 1 in 3 (32.7%) children and young people aged 8 to 18 say they enjoy reading in their free time
  • Only 1 in 5 (18.7%) say they read something daily in their free time
Both these statistics are their lowest levels in twenty years.
