Norwich Market - changing places

Norwich Market is a centrepiece for the city centre, but it is looking a little tired in places.

There was a consultation with suggestions for how to change the market.

Norwich Market is a vibrant and historic landmark in the heart of our city. As one of the UK’s oldest and largest open-air markets, it’s a special space, full of character and community.

Our aim is to ensure Norwich Market continues to thrive and can better meet the needs of traders, visitors and our wider community into the future. We are exploring some potential upgrades to the market and its surroundings, while preserving its unique history and cultural strengths. We will work closely with traders, partners and the public.

We have been talking with traders and visitors to understand what people love and what could be improved. This has helped us understand how the market is currently working and where we could focus efforts to improve the space.

Three design concepts were explored:

Arcade - a main pathway through the market
Small squares - a series of small open spaces within the market
Central court - one single larger space within the market

Over 2800 people responded to the survey.

The BBC News has been following this story.

This story describes 'hopes and fears'.

Some fly-throughs of the proposals.

Opinions on this are varied.

Food court option is dividing opinion.

Some stallholders have been on the market for decades. The owner of Ron's Chips says his business would have to close if the changes go through.

There have also been some efforts made to reduce the number of pigeons.

A while back, a hawk was brought in. However, some people continued to feed the pigeons and now there is a petition to protect them and the result is that the pigeons are still there.....

I'll be following the next stage with interest.
