DG Outtake #2: Rich lists and extreme wealth

A piece in the Guardian from May 2025 looked at the extreme wealth of some individuals.

This is one of a series of blog posts linked to the research I did for the 'Discover Geography' series, and mentioning some of the reading I did to prepare some of the chapters.

Not all of this material made it into the final book so I'm sharing it in these posts.

This was published last year and since then I've been doing quite a lot of writing in this area for the Discover Geography series.

It's written by Dhananjayan Sriskandarajah, chief executive of the New Economics Foundation.

The piece considers the impact of the concentration of wealth into the hands of a few. This aspect of income inequality is covered in a chapter on Fairness.

I also explored the importance of places such as Monaco (tax havens) and the bonded warehouses at locations such as Geneva's Freeport - which I have driven past before when visiting the city and using the airport.

Another book I referred to was 'Limitarianism' which proposes a series of limits to wealth. Money need to be used for good if we are to solve some of the issues we have at the moment.

Here's the author at a Gresham College lecture:

The current Iran War and other decisions made by the current US administration involve certain individuals profiting from the negative impacts of others.
