DG Outtakes #7: Barcelona and overtourism

This is one of a series of blog posts linked to the research I did for the 'Discover Geography' series, and mentioning some of the reading I did to prepare some of the chapters.

Not all of this material made it into the final book so I'm sharing it in these posts.

Parc Güell is a very popular location in Barcelona. I visited last quite a while back and have an image of me on the classic mosaic benches and my daughter went and sat in the same place on a more recent visit.

This article in New Yorker describes some of the recent changes to the Parc which have been less welcome.

The Special urban development plan for tourist accommodation (PEUAT), defines and regulates the tourism offer.

PEUAT website is below.

Data on tourism in Barcelona can be found here.

It will be interesting to see the impact on future visitors.
