These include excellent graphics and explorations of different elements of cities.
A good website to accompany the journal with digital versions of some of the articles.
Michael Palin wrote an article on Sheffield to accompany the issue, although it is only available online and not featured in the magazine itself.
It's a lovely article, which describes two cities which he has called home: Sheffield and London, and two which had an impact on him as a visitor: Calcutta and Istanbul.
I remember stone buildings rather than brick. It was quite a tough and rugged sort of area. It was 800 ft up, so you got snow every winter and quite wild weather. Then there was the other side of the city which was the iron and steel-producing area, which was always literally sort of under a cloud. Very dark, and not somewhere that I went to very often – although my father worked as the export manager in one of the steel firms down there. There was a different feel to that part of Sheffield.
This was the part of Sheffield I visited most, as my father worked in that part of Sheffield from the 1950s to the 1980s, when he moved to a different steel mill. We also travelled through Sheffield to head out for the Peak District, a regular weekend haunt, as did Michael:

Sheffield defines me. I think anywhere you spend the first ten, fifteen years of your life is going to define you, whether you like it or not.
