Local Issues: Wicken Water

It's always useful to find a local issue which can be followed for a while.

As I drive from my home village into King's Lynn, where I go to catch the train to London and elsewhere, I pass the small hamlet/village of Ashwicken.
There is a lake which sits back from the road, and sits within the area of Leziate Parish Council - see their thoughts here.

This August (2020), a £35 million proposal was prepared for the local planning board of the Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, and leaflets were dropped into all the neighbours' letterboxes showing what was planned: a wellness eco-resort, called Wicken Water.

The website outlines a thorough proposal for a wellness resort, involving lodges.
It shows the site and what is planned.
A scoping report can be read here, which has over 100 pages of details for those who really want to dig into the proposals.
For example, this considers the local area's employment level and uses IMD data and mapping to explore the need for jobs, which the scheme will create.
Flood risk also needs to be explored, even though the scheme is actually built on and around a lake.
Noise levels also come into the equation - something which can be measured using apps.

The local residents are not all in favour of the scheme, for a number of reasons.

The developers point to the economic benefits of the scheme, including 260 local jobs.

They offer sustainable credentials too, and the site will be car free (although visitors will have to get there by car of course).
A public consultation is now open and will include a webinar in early September. It will be interesting to see how this develops (literally and otherwise)
