Dharavi and the pandemic

Thanks to several people for directing me to this article on Bloomberg website.

Dharavi is a bustee or slum in the Indian city of Mumbai: one of the most densely populated areas of the planet. It's been visited by various people who've made videos for use in the classroom including Kevin McCloud.

When the pandemic started, there was an obvious conclusion to come to: that the density of people combined with poor sanitation and opportunities to sanitise etc. would lead to the virus spreading rapidly through the area. Others said that the warm climate would lessen the impact of the virus, or perhaps the youthful nature of the population would mean fewer fatalities as it affected older people more severely.

The Bloomberg piece explores how the community of Dharavi helped keep the virus at bay. With a population of over 1 million crowded into a small area it has been very successful.
