A changing relationship with summer

For generations, summer has held positive connotations. During childhood it was the long hot school summer holidays which stretched ahead endlessly, especially the summer of 1976. Summer means days on the beach, or sailing. Days playing golf, or walking in the hills. It's reading under the shade of a tree, and a nice cold beer, with condensation beading on the glass...

Now, in this piece by Jonathan Watts in 'The Guardian' it appears we may need to change our opinion.

We have cause to fear summer.

The Met Office used its first extreme heat warning at the start of this week.

“As weather more frequently goes outside past experience, it is going beyond what the infrastructure can cope with – so it’s more of a threshold in the human system than the climate system. We urgently need to catch up on adaptation, we are lagging well behind the changes in climate that are now occurring.”

Richard Betts, Met Office
