GA Early career geography teacher eConference: how to build a geographer

It may be the start of the summer holidays, but some colleagues are already planning some CPD for the year ahead. The GA has added a few new courses in advance to their website.

One of them is listed below
, and I am very pleased to be one of the presenters for this event:

Early career geography teacher eConference: how to build a geographer

This is an online webinar and prices start from just £10 which is excellent value for money.

Course overview

Join us for our early career teacher eConference which focuses on how teachers can build and develop both themselves and their students to be effective geographers. Delegates will explore the different characteristics exhibited by effective geographers and how these can be nurtured and developed. Following this, teachers will consider the importance of belonging to a subject community and the support and guidance that this can provide. The afternoon sessions focus on practical examples of effective and engaging teaching resources and tips and advice for making the most of your experience as an early career teacher.
The eConference will conclude with a TeachMeet which will give delegates the opportunity to share some of their own practice.

Supporting research/references

The Early Career Framework (2019) is underpinned by extensive research evidence, including the importance of teacher subject knowledge and support.
This section of the GA website is to support new geography teachers, whether you are undergoing training, are newly qualified or are in the early years of your teaching career. It provides guidance and information about all aspects of geography teaching.

Key learning aims

  • To understand the importance of subject knowledge and subject-specific support in being an effective teacher
  • To meet other early career geography teachers and have the opportunity to share resources and network
  • Expected impact on teachers
  • Increased understanding of the importance of subject-specific knowledge
  • Increased understanding of the importance of belonging to a subject community and the support and guidance which is available
  • Increased confidence through the sharing of practical examples and resources
  • Expected impact on student outcomes

‘The most effective teachers have ‘deep knowledge’ of the subject(s) they teach: secure subject knowledge equips them to plan so that students progress in their learning, and enables them to evaluate students’ thinking and identify and respond to misconceptions'. (from the GA National Research Report into Geography initial teacher education and teacher supply in England, 2015)
