Barry Lopez essay

We are coming up to the anniversary of the passing of 'the master': Barry Lopez.

Check out this piece in The Believer: an interview with Barry.

It dates from Decembr 2019 and, like all such interviews, rewards reading. I like this description from the time when he wrote the classic 'Arctic Dreams'.

The narrator should strive to be a companion, not an authority. He’s trying to open up the Arctic world to people. The image I had of myself was of standing next to someone, explaining the particulars of what we were seeing while at the same time putting my hand on the small of their back and pushing them forward, so that they could take possession of whatever the scene was, and I would just disappear.
