GAConf22: Everyday geographies of hurricanes: critiquing powerful knowledge 1 - #98 of many

The latest in a series of posts showcasing sessions which are included in the programme for the GA Conference in April 2022.

This is part of a connected double session: a lecture followed by a workshop.

This session will explore the powerful vs everyday knowledge debate in school geography by critically investigating the politics of knowledge construction and commodification in secondary school geography.

We will examine powerful knowledge as a tool of racial capitalism in education policy globally, and in examination specifications and textbooks, and draw on student voices to explore teaching with everyday knowledges about Hurricane Maria.

I also taught about Hurricane Maria using a comic book. There is a blog post about it elsewhere on the blog, and I also used it for lockdown learning along with a question sheet, as the students could download the comic and read it on their devices.
