PTI Enrichment Residential - July 2022

The Prince's Teaching Institute has been in existence since 2001, and worked with thousands of teachers in that time across a range of events and formats, and also through its networks.

I've been fortunate to be invited to speak at sessions in London and Harrogate previously, and also led some of their online sessions during the pandemic when face to face wasn't possible. I'm pleased to say that this year I have also been invited for the first time to the annual residential weekend for geography.

Previous speakers at this event have included Michael Palin, Klaus Dodds, Danny Dorling and others.

This year, they'll have to put up with me.

  • Subject passion and expertise are essential requirements for effective teaching
  • Assessment should be designed in such a way as to encourage and enhance good teaching - exams should never curtail learning
  • Teachers are the key to enhancing opportunities for young people, and their role in society should be promoted

Booking is now open for the event, with more speakers still to be confirmed in addition to Professor Hazel Barrett (a former GA President).

Tickets can be booked here.

I am delighted to be able to offer the following 3 hour session:

Everyday engagement with (un)familiar places

Fieldwork is an essential component of a geographical education, offering opportunities for the acquisition of geographical skills, development of social skills and teamwork, and the investigation of the location being visited. This may be the school site, local area, unfamiliar city or landscape, or overseas.

This session which will begin with a look at the development of my GA Presidential theme of 'Everyday Geographies', before connecting these ideas to the curriculum and the key geographical concept of 'Place'. Delegates will then be introduced to a range of potential activities and ideas for exploring and capturing the area around Parker's Piece in central Cambridge, with at least an hour in the field to use the techniques, before returning to review the experience, and think about future fieldwork.

Delegates will have access to a Google Drive full of resources for future use.
