National Fieldwork Week Ideas #20: Slow Ways

Throughout May I shall share ideas for National Fieldwork Week - one per day...

Find out more about National Fieldwork Week here.

Slow Ways is Dan Raven Ellison's latest project, and is developing a network of walking routes across the country.

Slow Ways is described as a (non)citizen guerrilla geography project.

Slow Ways is an initiative to create a network of walking routes that connect all of Great Britain’s towns and cities.

What is your nearest SLOW WAYS route?

Each route needs to be validated, and this requires someone to walk the route and feed back on any problems or changes since the route was created. Many of the routes were created using maps and aerial imagery, plus resources such as Google Street View images where available.

This could be a job for a geography teacher - outside of school time even - or depending on the relative position of your school to one or more of these routes, the validation could be handed over to a group, particularly of older pupils or perhaps a Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

How are routes validated? Discuss what makes a route safe to use and inclusive to everyone if possible.

The week has the theme of CHANGE.

If you do use this, or any other of the ideas I share, please let us know about what you do. We will be asking people to share their outcomes in various ways. Remember that the theme is CHANGE.

Update

I hope you watched the piece on Slow Ways on Countryfile on 29th of May

It was excellent and ended with a suggestion that you might want to help reviewing the walks.
