Throughout May I shall share ideas for National Fieldwork Week - one per day...
Find out more about National Fieldwork Week here.
Another idea is to explore the use of front gardens. Which have gardens, which are used for paving?
Which have trees, which are used for parking?
I wrote a piece on this for the OS Mapstream service, which has now been discontinued where students surveyed the roads around the school to see how the front gardens of properties were being used, and whether they remained as gardens with lawns and other impermeable surfaces.
This could also be done using StreetView time machine feature to see how many gardens have been lost during the period within which the images were captured to add to the detail of the enquiry.
I have printed off some maps using Digimap for Schools using the colouring overlay to take out the extraneous detail.
What surfaces might students find?
Brick Weave
Block Paving
Gravel
Lawn
Paving Stones
Flower beds
Trees
It is worth checking the resources at the London National Park City.
There was a themed garden about this at the Chelsea Flower Show this week.
The week has the theme of CHANGE.
If you do use this, or any other of the ideas I share, please let us know about what you do. We will be asking people to share their outcomes in various ways. Remember that the theme is CHANGE.
