National Fieldwork Week Ideas #29: In the steps of Tati as a Flâneur

Throughout May I shall share ideas for National Fieldwork Week - one per day...

Find out more about National Fieldwork Week here.

One of my favourite films is Jacques Tati's 1967 film 'PlayTime'.

I came across an excellent piece on the nature of the city that forms the setting for the film, with its mix of futuristic and old fashioned side by side, and a chaos underpinning everything.

It considers the character of Hulot as a flâneur, wandering the city and observing it - in some cases literally the camera stares through the window at the action taking place within the buildings... Hulot stalks and is confounded by architecture, gets lost, meets old acquaintances and the camera reveals the hidden poetry and ballet of the city...

Why not take a wander, and allow older students to be flaneurs... wandering the local area and observing what they see and in particular looking for post COVID change. We got used to seeing the 2m apart signs and other changes in infrastructure. Have they all disappeared?

Why not consider what has changed within the local area?

Take a drift, or derive.

The week has the theme of CHANGE.

If you do use this, or any other of the ideas I share, please let us know about what you do. We will be asking people to share their outcomes in various ways. Remember that the theme is CHANGE.
