A good piece on Conversation about the earth looked at from space and the importance of the "overview effect".

Astronauts have the privilege that few ever experience: to sit and watch the planet unroll before them. I've heard quite a few interviews where this has been discussed by those who've been able to leave the Earth's atmosphere.

The overview effect is the name given to the almost religious impact that this has on them.
