The summer has been a season of generally bad news on a number of fronts.
The current flooding in Pakistan is one of the most devastating of all those events, with some terrible statistics and videos emerging from the area affected, which is home to around 30 million people! This is as bad as the flooding in 2010 which required a great deal of international aid, including a DEC appeal.
Visiting flood affected areas & meeting people. The magnitude of the calamity is bigger than estimated. Times demand that we come together as one nation in support of our people facing this calamity. Let us rise above our differences & stand by our people who need us today.

International Aid will definitely be needed.
A ReliefWeb report was published yesterday.
A humanitarian disaster is unfolding in Pakistan. Unprecedented flooding has destroyed towns and infrastructure. The Swat river is carrying the largest volume of water in recorded history. Far higher than the so called 1-in-1000 year "superflood” of 2010. A 🧵of videos, stories

The Sindh province is particularly badly affected, along with neighbouring Balochistan.
If you can spare a few pounds (and that is becoming increasingly difficult for many), one option for you to support the relief efforts is to take a look at the work that Iram Sammar has been doing. She has a GoFund Me page and has shared further information on the work she has been supporting on her blog here since late July.
There have been many more periods of heavy rain this year than would normally be the case. Meanwhile in China, major rivers and lakes are running dry. There are many causes of this disaster of course, and the international community will need to step in.
Reminder of the recent Ilan Kelman post related to the GeogPod.
