“Fieldwork should have to be justified in the same way that not doing fieldwork is expected to be justified”
Anna Guasco
Thanks to this ESRI blog for the tipoff to an interesting research paper.
Fieldwork is a major part of research, and a lot is made of the need to visit distant locations to collect data. This of course takes a lot of time, and also has an impact on the planet by creating a carbon footprint which could be avoided by carrying out interviews on Zoom for example, rather than in person.
There's a link through to the download page for an article by Anna Guasco of the University of Cambridge.
It's an interesting discussion to be had.
I know a few people heading for COP27 who have thought seriously about how they can justify flying to the otherwise inaccessible venue in Egypt - more to come on that in future blogposts.
