World Cup 2022 #1 - Amnesty International

As I mentioned yesterday, this year, I'm going to be posting links relating to the World Cup which starts today with a match involving the hosts Qatar.

I shall post links through the tournament to 'alternative' resources that could be used to discuss the theme of whether students should boycott this World Cup and the wider issues surrounding its location in Qater.

The first resource is from Amnesty International.

It's a report on the issues surrounding human rights generally, but particularly amongst the migrant workers who built the stadium, along with LGBTQ+ issues and more.

This briefing examines the progress Qatar has achieved on labour rights in the 12 years since it was awarded the rights to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the impacts of its reforms and what further action is needed to fully protect the rights of all migrant workers in the country.

This resource was flagged up by a colleague who usually runs the sweepstake amongst the staff.

Money raised will go to Amnesty International this year.

I shall be sharing resources and some alternative views for those who want to carry on teaching about it, or to perhaps use it as the basis for a more 'critical' exploration of the themes surrounding the event.

I'll post one resource or link a day during the tournament.

UPDATE

I am currently in Romania, where the World Cup Opening Ceremony was being shown. There were some fun moments with a parade of previous World Cup mascots and also an exploration of themes surrounding the Muslim world.
