“We must shift America from a needs to a desires culture. People must be trained to desire, to want new things, even before the old have been entirely consumed. We must shape a new mentality in America. Man’s desire must overshadow his needs,”
Paul Mazur, Harvard Business Review, 1927
An article on a new book by Sophie Benson which explores the growth of the consumer economy and the various technologies and pyschological tricks used to encourage us to part with money for stuff that we don't really need.
I'll avoid buying it as I already have lots of similar books, but the extracts in the piece are well written, and some useful quotes for our Geography of Stuff unit.
In this excerpt from her new book, The Sustainable Wardrobe, Sophie Benson breaks down the psychology of consumerism, looking at the history of advertising and explaining exactly how we ended up in an endless cycle of consumption.
