On the move

New Office for National Statistics visualisations based on Census 2021 data have been released this week.

Thanks to Brendan Conway and Bob Lang for the tipoffs.

Origin-destination data show the movement of people from one location to another, such as migration and commuting patterns. It is sometimes known as "flow data".

This is an interactive guide to some of the origin-destination data published for Census 2021.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic strongly affected patterns of population movement. Census day was 21 March 2021, when lockdown restrictions were in force in the UK.

Thanks to Ahmad Barclay and the team at ONS for their work creating these maps and visualisations.
There is migration flow data (people moving house) and commuting flow data (people travelling to work).

Why not head for the site and have a go at visualising data in your own home area.

According to the site I am one of several hundred people who travel from the Breckland area making their way to East Cambridgeshire to work. They'll be the people I see every day on my daily commute to Ely.
