Stop the Wensum Link

A strong campaign is being fought to prevent the construction of a road which will connect the Northern Distributor Road with the A47 and complete the northern bypass of Norwich. A march was held recently through the streets of Norfolk.

This is going to have a significant negative effect on a whole range of habitats, including a colony of rare barbastelle bats. The cost is spiralling for the very short distance involved, and the overall economic benefits being touted are unproven.

The protest group's website is here.

My personal issue with this road is the limited use that is made of the other parts of this road section, compared with the environmental impact of previous construction. These included bat bridges about which the jury is out. I can't imagine this road attracting the volumes of traffic that use the existing routes.

It seems that the Government may be funding the project - it would not be something the county council could afford, and the estimates of cost are likely to be underestimates...
