A story in a weekend's Guardian newspaper explores the world of the "preppers".
These are people who have started to prepare for some future scenario where society may break down, I've blogged about this previously, due to the book 'Bunker' by Bradley Garrett.
Wired reported on the $100 million retreat being built by Mark Zuckerberg in Hawaii.

This focusses on the preparations made by wealthy individuals as well. Land is being bought in remote locations, such as New Zealand, where structures are being created ready for any forthcoming break down in society caused by what is now a fairly long list of possibilities.
The pandemic and global financial issues have increased the interest in having plenty of food and other resources available should the power go off, or shortages lead to panic buying. A cupboard lined with tins provides some sort of certaintly; bottled water or a large water butt guarantees drinking water and toilet flushes if the mains water stop; a camping stove allows tins to be heated up - make sure you pack a tin opener as well though.
This recent Tweet was also relevant, and sent me to another article in this area of impending doom...
