Teaching Geography is the GA’s professional journal for secondary school geography teachers and is published three times per year. It contains articles on themes of interest for geography teachers and recent articles have included subject updates for teaching plate tectonics, encouraging student reading, using and embedding GIS, and decolonising the curriculum.
The content of the journal is overseen by an Editorial Board of 10 members, led by the Editor, with support of the in-house team at the GA. Board members are geography teachers, leaders and those involved in initial geography teacher education at a variety of stages of their career.
We now have a vacancy and are looking for a volunteer to join the Board.

- provide the Editor with feedback on drafts of articles submitted for possible publication – there are up to 10 in each issue of the journal. The feedback reviews suitability for publication and gives advice for the author on how to improve the draft. The timescale for sending the Editor comments on drafts is usually two weeks from receiving them.
- attend two meetings of the board per year which take place on Saturdays. One is usually online in the Autumn and one is face-to-face in London in Spring. Board members read some preliminary materials and offer advice, thoughts and comments at the meetings.
There would also be opportunities for Board members to guest edit an issue of the journal, if that is of interest.
We are looking for someone who:
- is actively (or has recently been) involved in secondary school and sixth form geography teaching as a teacher, mentor, examiner, ITE lead or head of department
- has knowledge of key issues relevant to secondary geography teaching which can guide and advise writers
- has experience of writing and publications and can write clearly for a non-specialist audience
- works well as part of a team and
- is a member of the GA either as an individual or through their school.
