The end of Denmark

Was interested to read about the impact of a new TV drama on Danish television made by Thomas Vinterberg who has previously made some very high profile films including the excellent 'Another Round', which won the Oscar in 2020.

Familier som vores (Families Like Ours) – a drama which depicts a flooded Denmark shut down and evacuated – has been viewed nearly 1m times and become a national talking point.
He says of the drama: – part of the cli-fi, or climate fiction, genre that sets stories in the impacts of the climate crisis and global heating – that it:

“imagines a situation where we, as citizens of a civilised and wealthy part of the world, are forced to leave our country, our friends, relatives, and everything we hold dear”.

Together with about six million compatriots, the family at the centre of the drama will have to bid their country farewell, being relocated to unforeseen new destinations such as Romania and Bulgaria. Due to the escalating flow of refugees, the borders of France, Germany and not least the Nordic countries are all being closed to Danish immigrants. Dramatic drama, existential crises and assorted harsh ordeals await our family in this seven-part epic of nearly as many hours.

At its premiere at the Venice International film festival, it evoked tears, shouts and a standing ovation, with one critic describing it as “grimly prophetic”.

More recently we have other threats being made to Denmark, and Greenland.

King Frederik was featured on the GeographyGeek Christmas quiz in 2024.
He has added two more prominent symbols to represent Greenland and the Faroes.

Some interesting geopolitical times ahead.
